And a CHILLY new year!

Hello Farm Friends,

Well the new year is here! Honestly, I am not that excited about it. I think maybe it is because all of my growing up life 2010 seemed like so far in the future that I would be OLD by the time it got here. And now it is here and well, I guess I am OLD! Haha!

New year maybe but it is COLD from where we are farming! Goodness, what a way to kickoff the first of the year below freezing for the HIGH! And to think all this time I thought I lived in Tennessee!

All of the critters are faring well with good amounts of hay and still a few paddocks of stockpiled pasture to munch on. In the coming weeks we take off our fall freezer lambs and then move the ewes "home" to the house side of the farm so we can keep a better eye on them and feed them in the barn. WHY? Because we are having babies! I say we because having sheep is the portion of my farming life where I get to live out my life dream of being a doctor or veterinarian. Sometimes the ewes need help with the birthing process and even if they don't it is such a great joy to see those little guys be born and such a mystery as you wonder if another one will pop out (sheep often have twins, sometimes triplets or more, though we totally hope for twins since there are only two available milking units per ewe, think about that one for a bit!) So the lambing season fulfills the midwife in me!

Oh it won't happen until March, but it is COLD and I don't have a lot to look forward to right now except washing cold vegetables in cold water and storing them in the cooler that we have to heat to keep from freezing (again, you might have to think about that for a minute!)

So happy new year to you all. Here's hoping for a great 2010 that makes more sense than 2009 did!
Love,
Julie
