The year of the FROGS

Hello Farm Friends,

This week marks the beginning of the summer vegetables in earnest. Everything except squash that is! Bless the squash's heart. Normally, we are swimming in squash, tons of it, so much our csa customers are asking if they can burn it for fuel, but not this year. The floods took out our earliest squash planting and it seems as if every planting since then has been less than mediocre. The last planting is showing some promise, but it is hard for those couple of rows to supply our entire CSA customer base as well as provide for markets. Each year seems to have its "thing" that makes it memorable. Some years it is drought or terrible overabundance of cucumbers. This year has been marked by lack of squash (of all varieties) and frogs. Yes, FROGS. They are everywhere this year. I have no idea if they were brought here by the flood waters from various places or if this was just a bumper crop kind of year for them anyway, but we always see then when we are harvesting, at the water trough, in the wash house, really everywhere and anywhere around the farm these days. Thankfully, I like frogs more than snakes or spiders and they don't sting, so the year of the frogs is one of the more pleasant critter years to endure.

Summer is in full swing which means we are actually busier than the bees these days. We are happy for the work and glad to do it in order to provide good quality food for your family to munch on. We hope you have a blessed rest of July and perhaps get a good nap on a hot summer day, oh and buy or make some popsicles, the boys highly recommend them in July!

DON"T FORGET about the Tuesday Franklin Farmers Market from 3-6:30. There are lots of great farms with lots of good food, breads, jams, berries, milk, meat and veggies. The bonus feature is there is plenty of parking (close)!
